Yes — if it's inland marine. No — if you're relying on auto or property coverage. A properly written inland marine (contractors equipment) policy covers your fusion splicer at the shop, in the truck, at the job site, and in transit between them. What does NOT cover it: your commercial auto policy (covers the vehicle, not contents), your commercial property policy (covers equipment at your premises only), and your homeowners policy (excludes business property). If your $25,000 Fujikura lives in a van, inland marine is the only policy protecting it.
Why the obvious policies don't work
Three coverage assumptions fail here. Commercial auto physical damage pays for the vehicle — cargo and tools inside are excluded on standard forms. Commercial property covers business personal property at the scheduled premises; most forms give only a small (often $5K–$15K) off-premises extension that won't touch a splicer-plus-OTDR loadout. And personal policies exclude business equipment almost entirely. The result: a van break-in at a hotel parking lot with $60K of splicing gear inside can be a total out-of-pocket loss for a contractor who 'has full coverage' on the van.
What inland marine actually covers
Contractors equipment / inland marine is built for mobile equipment: coverage applies on premises, in transit, and at unattended job sites, for perils including theft, collision damage in transit, drops, fire, and weather. High-value units (splicers, OTDRs) should be scheduled individually with serial numbers at replacement cost; small tools ride under a blanket limit. Typical cost is 0.5%–2% of scheduled value per year — a $100K schedule runs roughly $500–$2,000.
The claims details that matter
Two policy details decide whether a transit claim pays smoothly: theft-from-unattended-vehicle conditions (some forms require visible forced entry or a locked vehicle — know yours) and replacement cost vs actual cash value (splicers depreciate fast on paper; RC coverage replaces new-for-old). Keep serial numbers, purchase receipts, and photos of your gear on file — documentation is the difference between a two-week claim and a two-month fight.
Get Coverage Without the Gaps
We build fiber contractor programs where the GL, pollution, auto, and equipment coverage actually line up — no fatal exclusions, no surprises at claim time.
